The Treasure Room

Until April 15, 2012 - Wonders of collectors in the Museums of Florence

In a city like Florence, an ark of public and private art treasures, it was inevitable that the industry of antique-dealing would take hold and flourish. In the 19th and 20th centuries, people like Stefano Bardini, Elia Volpi, Salvatore Romano, Charles Loeser, the Actons, Frederick Stibbert, John Temple Leader, Herbert Percy Horne bought and furnished, with eclectic taste, villas and small palazzi, which they later gave to the city along with their art collections. The exhibition presents this extraordinary historical moment through an evaluation of collections brought together by connoisseurs and antiquarians, collections that gave the city an international aspect. The exhibition forms part of the rich program Le Stanze dei Tesori organized by the project "Piccoli Grandi Musei." The project starts at the exhibit located at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, and suggests a visit through the "treasures" of some of the remarkable museums of Florence: the Stefano Bardini, the Horne, the Stibbert, the Fondazione Salvatore Romano, the Bandini, the Palazzo Davanzati, and the Casa Rodolfo Siviero museums. These selected sites, which in the past were collector's houses or antique dealer's showrooms, are now among the richest and most eclectic museums of Florence. Visitors can purchase the Pass dei Tesori, a multiple entry ticket to the museums participating in the project; this ticket also includes free guided tours and workshops.
